Melrose Hall provides a venue for group activities and events for the residents and visitors of Hoylake and the surrounding area.

Melrose is fast becoming the Live Theatre Venue for Hoylake.

For a list of regular activities at the hall, see Melrose Activities. For one-off events, see Events.

The main accommodation consists of two halls:

  • The Large Hall has capacity for 100 seated theatre style and 80 seated with tables and can be used as a large exhibition area. It has a stage with excellent sound and lighting facilities and also has a Wide Screen Film Unit. At the rear is an adjacent food preparation area. Running along one side is an aisle conservatory which usually contains refreshment tables but can be closed off from the Large Hall.

  • The Small Hall has capacity for meetings of up to 25 and can be used as a small exhibition area. It can also be used as a theatre dressing area with access directly to the side of the stage.

Full disabled access is through the Small Hall to the Main Hall. A disabled toilet is available.

To find the Hall, look for the road at the side of the Ship Hotel. It is served by buses 38, 39 and 17. It is about 10 minutes walk from MerseyRail station, Hoylake. Parking is available for about 10 cars off the lane at the left side and 4 cars next to the disabled entry.

Live Theatre

Melrose is now recognised as an intimate theatre for new shows and is bringing cheaper, live performances to the local residents who usually have to travel to New Brighton, Liverpool or Port Sunlight to see professional and amateur theatre.

All over the country, as audience sizes continue to drop, larger theatres are struggling to survive. The future is in small local intimate theatres which can be filled to capacity at each performance.

History

The revival of Melrose Hall began in March 1999 after it had been closed for 2 years and was facing demolition. Jackie Hall and a team of volunteers acted quickly to save the Hall. On a wing and a prayer, they re-opened it in September 1999. They have worked continually ever since raising money to refurbish it. So far, 65,000 has been raised for work done by volunteers and kind Business Friends. As a result, the hall has been rewired, electrical heating and hot water plumbing installed, new toilets fitted and the food preparation area fully refurbished. Double-glazing, Fire Alarm and Security Alarm Systems have also been installed. The stage has been improved. Curtains, carpets, tables and chairs have all been replaced and the accommodation redecorated. The roofs over the halls have been renewed and the floors throughout have been re-laid to the latest specification. We estimate that the value of the work done is in excess of 200,000.

Our current lettings earn the 600 each month needed to keep the Hall open. (This is the cost of lighting, heating, insurance and water rates.)
